Sponsorship Activation Ideas for Football Clubs

•By Joe Housley, Co-Founder

The best football sponsorship activation ideas give a sponsor something fans actually take part in: a half-time challenge, a mascot programme, a content series, a community project or a named lounge, not just a logo on a board. Ready-made ideas make deals easier to sell and renew. Below are ideas organised by asset, each with a real example, and notes on what works in the Premier League, the EFL and non-league.

This article is part of our guide to sponsorship activation and reporting.

What is sponsorship activation in football?

Activation is how a brand uses the rights it has bought to get its message across, and the spend usually sits on top of the rights fee (fcbusiness, July 2025). There is no published UK football figure for activation spend, so treat these non-UK studies as rough guides:

  • The 19th Canadian Sponsorship Landscape Study (2024 calendar year, published March 2026) reported rights fees of $2.56bn and activation of $1.66bn in Canada. That works out at around 65 cents of activation for every dollar of rights fees, a figure derived from the study's two published totals (Adrenalin).
  • McKinsey (2014), citing IEG research from 2011, said companies typically spend $0.50 to $1.60 on activation for every $1 of rights fees (McKinsey).

The sponsor usually pays, but the club supplies the platform and often the idea. A smaller sponsor with no agency will rely on you for both.

What are the best matchday activation ideas?

The strongest matchday ideas create a moment the crowd watches or joins, such as a half-time game, a mascot programme or a big-screen feature with a purpose.

  • Half-time challenge with a rolling jackpot. At Leyton Orient (League One) in 2025-26, BetWright ran the "Bangers N' Cash Crossbar Challenge": one shot from the penalty spot at the crossbar, with a jackpot that started at £3,000 and rose £1,000 each home game without a winner. The final winner took £10,000 on 2 May 2026 (European Gaming). Rules note: BetWright is a gambling brand, so any version for a gambling sponsor must follow the football gambling code, with no under-18 participants or appeal. The same format works for a car dealer or estate agent.
  • Mascot sponsor. Forth Scaffolding became Official Mascot Sponsor at Hearts for 2024-25, with big-screen and programme presence when mascot winners appear, plus free mascot packages for children nominated by the club's community department (Hearts).
  • Big-screen moments with a purpose. Cadbury and Chelsea's "Sign with Fingers" puts British Sign Language interpreters on screen at men's and women's home matches, with BSL content on club channels and BSL stadium tours (Chelsea FC).
  • LED takeovers. Virtual or hybrid perimeter systems can show different messages to TV viewers in different markets, as in an earlier example at Leeds United (2017, subject to EFL approval) (Display Daily).

What digital and social content can a sponsor own?

A sponsor can present a recurring content series, front campaigns with players and creators, or turn a kit launch into a fan event that earns press coverage.

  • Presented series. Google Pixel's 2023 deals with Arsenal and Liverpool included "Pitchside, Presented by Pixel", shot on Pixel phones at Arsenal home Premier League and WSL matches (Google).
  • Player and creator campaigns. Paramount+ and Arsenal (November 2025) built campaigns around Paramount+ shows featuring players, legends, supporters and creator Sharky (Broadband TV News).
  • Kit-launch events. Midnite's 2025-26 kit launch at Wolves ran trivia at Molineux to win season tickets and 150th anniversary shirts, with Wolves legend George Elokobi doing media interviews. Its PR agency reports 41 articles and 154m total reach, by its own figures (Pressbox PR). Rules note: Midnite is a gambling brand. Under CAP's "strong appeal" rule, current players in gambling ads are high risk: the ASA found ads featuring current Premier League players broke it, while ads with retired players now working as pundits did not (ASA, March 2023). A retired club legend, as here, is lower risk.

How can sponsors activate through the community?

Community activation links the sponsor to your foundation, grassroots football or local health, and fans rate it highly: 75% of avid women's sport fans said activations focused on community and grassroots sport would improve their view of a brand (Women's Sport Trust/ONSIDE, 2023).

  • Grassroots kit. Rexel and Denmans, the EFL's official electrical wholesaler for 2025-26 and 2026-27, run "Powering Dreams", giving kits to hundreds of grassroots clubs (Inside World Football).
  • Facilities. EA Sports FC Futures, a $10m plan announced in April 2023, works with the Football Foundation on community facilities (EA).
  • The league's charity on the shirt. EFL in the Community has appeared on the back of every EFL player's shirt since 2024-25 (Lincoln City).

What activation ideas work for a women's team?

Women's teams suit behind-the-scenes content, training kit, tours and customer rewards, and the audience responds: 72% of avid women's sport fans think more favourably of brands that sponsor women's sport, against 45% for men's sport (WST/ONSIDE, 2023).

  • Behind-the-scenes content. Havas Play research found 49% of fans want more behind-the-scenes and personality content from brands, and 29% cannot name a single women's sport sponsor (Marketing Week, June 2025).
  • Training kit and tours. Constant Contact, Chelsea Women's principal partner, added training kit and the presenting partnership of the August 2026 tour of Australia and New Zealand (Sportcal).
  • Customer rewards. British Gas, a WSL and WSL 2 sponsor from 2025-26, rewards its customers with tickets and experiences (Sportcal).
  • Non-league. At Lewes FC, the first club to pay its men's and women's teams equally, Curve expanded to training wear sponsor in 2023 and became a fan-owner of the club (PR Newswire).

How can kit and training wear be activated?

Kit works hardest when the design tells the sponsor's story, or when a position comes with its own plan.

  • Storytelling shirts. Netflix's Top Boy appeared on semi-professional Hackney Wick FC's shirts for a second season in 2023-24, with 32 London postcodes woven into the fabric (SoccerBible).
  • Sleeves and training kit after the gambling change. With gambling off Premier League shirt fronts from 2026-27, Everton moved Stake to the sleeve and signed CMC Markets for the front (Gambling.com). Rules note: the FA's 2024-25 statement on the football gambling code reports that children's replica kits do not carry gambling logos (The FA).

How do hospitality and B2B ideas add value?

Named lounges and business clubs give B2B sponsors what they value most: client entertaining and networking. Caytoo data on English football, rugby and cricket found four of the five fastest-growing front-of-shirt sponsor categories since 2019 were B2B (City AM, May 2025).

  • Named lounges. MKM Building Supplies sponsors the MKM Executive Lounge at Scunthorpe United (National League, 2025-26), with naming rights and in-lounge branding in a space the club also hires out outside the football calendar (Scunthorpe United).
  • Business clubs. Bristol Rovers launched a Business Club in June 2025 from £495 + VAT a year, with networking events and ten general admission tickets (Bristol Rovers). A sponsor can present the club's networking events, or host one.

Can sponsors use fan data, retail and ticketing?

Yes, through on-pack promotions, prize draws and customer rewards, but check consent before sharing any fan data.

  • On-pack codes. In Germany, Mondelez brands worked with the Bundesliga, Bayern and Dortmund on in-store displays and on-pack codes, with prizes including walking out with players (Mondelez Germany, 2024).
  • Fan data. A sponsor generally needs consent to send marketing to fans who are new to it, and that consent should name the sponsor at sign-up (LawInSport, 2019). Data law has changed since then, so take advice before sharing anything.

Which activation ideas work at your level?

Every level can activate. The difference is budget and scale, not ambition.

Premier LeagueFront-of-shirt deals put at £5m to £15m by The Sponsor's Sean Connell, July 2026 (SBC News)Presented content series, player and creator campaigns, LED takeovers, foundation programmes, women's team tours

Non-leagueSpennymoor Town match ball £300 + VAT, women's first-team shirt £10,000 + VAT a season (Spennymoor Town); Oxford City match sponsorship £500 (Oxford City)Match sponsorship with social posts, player sponsors, storytelling shirts, women's team packages, local business networking

Non-league packages can be more than a logo. Oxford City's £500 match sponsorship includes a pre-match meal for up to ten, presenting Player of the Match and the sponsor's logo on matchday social posts.

Which rules affect football activation ideas?

Gambling, alcohol and less healthy food sponsors each face rules that limit what you can offer. Our sponsorship proposal guide covers them in detail. In short:

  • Gambling. Premier League clubs agreed in April 2023 to remove gambling sponsors from the front of matchday shirts from 2026-27. Sleeves and hoardings are not covered (Sky Sports). Seven Championship clubs have gambling front-of-shirt sponsors in 2026-27, including Stoke City (bet365) and Middlesbrough (Midnite) (SBC News). The football gambling code aims to limit gambling sponsors' reach to children and people at risk (iGaming Business), so keep them away from mascot, junior and children's kit assets. The FA's 2024-25 statement on the code reports at least half of Sky Bet's EFL LED allocation carried responsible gambling messages (The FA), so build them into LED packages.
  • Alcohol. The Portman Group's codes, which include a sponsorship code, say alcohol should be marketed only to over-18s. Check the current Portman Group code before you pitch.
  • Less healthy food and drink. Since 5 January 2026, TV ads for identifiable less healthy products cannot run between 5.30am and 9pm, and paid online ads for them are banned (Mishcon de Reya). Bird & Bird expects affected brands to lean on brand-only logos and experiential events (Bird & Bird).

How should you pitch an activation idea to a sponsor?

Show the prospect the idea with their brand already in it, not a list of assets.

That is where Sportworks helps at the pitching stage:

  • Studio creates branded activation visuals from reference images and a written concept, such as a concourse takeover.
  • Designs puts the prospect's logo on your kit, LED boards and signage, from your own inventory photos.
  • Video turns those images into short clips, including LED animations.
  • Decks pulls the concepts into a personalised pitch deck.

As MK Dons' Chief Commercial Officer puts it: "It lets us show a prospect exactly what their brand looks like on our inventory before they've even signed." Delivering and measuring the activation once signed is still your team's job. For finding the right brands to pitch in the first place, see how to find sponsors.

Football sponsorship activation FAQs

Who pays for sponsorship activation?

Usually the sponsor, on top of the rights fee. Agree in the contract who pays for what.

How much should a sponsor spend on activation?

There is no UK football benchmark. A Canadian study for 2024 implies around 65 cents per dollar of rights fees, and older IEG research put it at $0.50 to $1.60. Build simple activation into smaller packages.

Can a non-league club offer activation?

Yes. Match sponsorship with social posts, player sponsors and community projects all work on small budgets.
