How to Manage Multiple Sponsors Without Category Clashes

•By Joe Housley, Co-Founder

Managing multiple sponsors comes down to one habit: keep a single category map covering every partner, every entity you sell (men's, women's, academy, venue) and every outside party with rights over your inventory, then check each new deal against it before you pitch. Many clashes come from deals nobody cross-checked, often the league's, the competition's or a player's rather than your own.

For the wider picture of running partnerships, see our sponsorship management guide.

What is a category clash in sponsorship?

A category clash happens when two brands with rights in your property compete for the same customers, and at least one of them was promised it would be the only one. Category exclusivity is the promise that a partner owns its product category within your property. The model is traced to the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, which limited official partners to about 34 so each had its category to itself (RTR Sports).

Categories work at more than one level. RTR Sports splits a product category into macro-class, class and sub-class, for example cosmetics, skincare, day cream and then a specific treatment (RTR Sports). The level you sell at decides how much room is left for others.

How do you build a category map across all your sponsors?

Build one table that lists every category held, by whom, at what level and until when, across all your entities and all outside parties. RTR Sports notes that properties keep an "available categories" document showing occupied categories and contract durations, and that expiries open short windows to resell (RTR Sports). Your map is that document, extended to the whole portfolio.

Here is a layout we suggest (our own template, not an industry standard):

ColumnWhat goes in it
CategoryMacro-class, e.g. drinks
Sub-categoryClass or sub-class, e.g. beer, craft beer, 0.0 beer
HolderPartner name, or "open"
Parent companyOwner of the brand, so sister brands are visible
EntityMen's, women's, academy, venue, foundation
TerritoryUK, a named region, or global
Exclusive?Exclusive, non-exclusive, or exclusive within sub-category
Expiry and optionsEnd date, plus any matching or first-refusal rights
Blocked byLeague, competition, broadcaster, caterer or kit supplier rights

MotoGP's 2025 official partners show a clean line-up: Tissot as timekeeper, Michelin for tyres, BMW M as official car, DHL as courier, Estrella Galicia 0,0 for beer and Qatar Airways as airline (RTR Sports). One brand per line.

The map sits above your asset register, which tracks individual assets and their status. Our guide to sponsorship inventory covers the register and how to stop double-selling.

Where do sponsor clashes usually come from?

Many come from parties outside your own contracts: league and competition sponsors, players' personal deals, parent companies and catering partners.

League sponsors. These can coexist with club deals in the same category, or they can collide. Sky Bet is the EFL's title sponsor, yet in 2026-27 seven Championship clubs carry other gambling brands on the front of their shirts, including Birmingham City with Coral and Stoke City with bet365 (SBC News). What matters is which inventory the league controls. Where a league deal reaches club assets, it can go badly, as the Rangers and cinch dispute in our inventory article showed.

Competition sponsors at media duties. At Euro 2020, Cristiano Ronaldo moved Coca-Cola bottles aside at a press conference and Paul Pogba removed a Heineken 0.0 bottle. UEFA asked all 24 teams to stop, with tournament director Martin Kallen saying sponsor revenue matters for the tournament and for European football (Al Jazeera). Competition partners belong on your map too.

Players' personal sponsors. Eilish McColgan reportedly said she was threatened with being blocked from the 2023 London Marathon after planning to wear a vest carrying her personal sponsor Science in Sport's logo, which conflicted with official sponsor Lucozade Sport (LawInSport).

Parent companies and sister brands. Power Sponsorship offers a useful test: if you would demand exclusivity that blocks one brand were it owned by a rival, the two brands compete (Power Sponsorship). Apply it when a prospect's owner also owns a rival of an existing partner.

Venue and catering. Pouring rights can sit with a caterer or stadium operator. Map them before you pitch a drinks brand.

How do you check a new deal before you pitch it?

Run every prospect through a short clash check before any pitch goes out. This is the checklist we suggest:

  1. Parent company: who owns the brand, and do they own a rival to any current partner?
  2. Sub-category: exactly which products will they promote, and does that overlap any existing definition?
  3. Entity: which team or property is the deal for, and is that category already sold there?
  4. Territory: is the deal UK-wide, regional or global?
  5. League and competition: do any central partners block this category or claim the assets you plan to offer?
  6. Players: could the deal require player imagery that clashes with personal sponsors?
  7. Venue: does a caterer, pouring partner or stadium owner hold rights here?
  8. Incumbent rights: does an existing partner hold matching rights or a first refusal on this category?

If any answer is "not sure", find out first. Our guide to sponsorship contract clauses covers how to define categories and competitors tightly, and our renewal guide covers incumbent rights at renewal.

Can you have two sponsors in the same category?

Yes, if you design it that way and tell the incumbent first. There are four common ways to split a category.

By product or supply type. Cambridge United announced a three-year dual-brewery deal in June 2024: local brewer BrewBoard supplies craft beer at all bars, while Molson Coors supplies international brands such as Coors, Staropramen and Guinness in hospitality lounges (Cambridge United).

By entity. Selling your women's team front of shirt separately from the men's is a split by entity.

By territory. Manchester United runs a regional partner tier alongside its global partners, for example an official indoor entertainment centre partner for China (Manchester United). In dated figures from 2012-13, Marketing Week reported 38 United regional deals worth €32m (Marketing Week). Regional splits mainly suit clubs with a global fanbase.

By dropping exclusivity, at a lower price. Tokyo 2020's domestic programme allowed overlapping partners in eight categories, with NEC and Fujitsu both gold partners, and it produced record domestic sponsorship revenue. The same analysis warns that overlap weakens each brand's link with the event (Olympic analysis, Dr Shintaro Sato). BMO's head of corporate sponsorships said the bank would prefer exclusivity but "it does boil down to price" (TicketManager).

How many sponsors is too many?

There is no fixed number, but research summarised in our sponsorship management guide shows that clutter reduces sponsor retention. Add partners only when each tier gets distinct, visible rights.

What do you do when a sponsor clash happens?

Act early, tell the incumbent first and solve it with rights, not apologies. The playbook we suggest:

  1. Read both contracts for the exact definitions, carve-outs and remedies.
  2. Call the incumbent before they hear it elsewhere.
  3. Offer a make-good: extra inventory, content or hospitality.
  4. Renegotiate scope, for example narrowing the newcomer to a sub-category.
  5. Escalate to the league where a central deal is involved.

Plan for empty slots too. When sleeve sponsor DXC Technology ended its deal, Manchester United played a home game in August 2026 with a blank left sleeve. Premier League Rule M.15 requires the league logo on the left sleeve where no sponsor occupies it, and the club said it would wear the badge on both sleeves for the next home match (Inside World Football). An exit affects compliance, not only revenue.

How do you get multiple sponsors working together?

Treat your partners as a business network, and introduce them to each other where their categories do not overlap. A study of sponsor networks at two Danish clubs found about 32% of firms did more business with other members after joining, about 37% did deals with outside firms through network contacts, and around 59% preferred doing business with network members (Wagner, Persson and Overbye, 2017, Sport, Business and Management). The data is Danish, but the network is part of what you sell anywhere. Before suggesting a joint activation, ask whether the two brands would promote each other without you. If not, keep them apart.

What does this look like at a real club? A worked example

This example is hypothetical. A National League club has a local builder as principal partner, a pouring partner via its caterer, a women's team shirt partner and a regional bank on the back of shirt. The map shows:

  • Drinks is held at "beer" level, so a 0.0 or soft drinks sub-category is open, subject to the caterer's terms.
  • Motoring is empty across every entity.
  • The bank's exclusivity covers "financial services", so an insurer is blocked until the definition is narrowed at renewal.

That gives one category to pitch now, one after the caterer agrees and one to renegotiate.

How Sportworks helps

Your category map tells you what is open. Sportworks.io, the AI platform for sports commercial teams, helps you sell it with personalised pitches made in minutes. (Sponsor management is on the Sportworks roadmap, not in the product today.)

  • Scale lets you select a whole industry for an open category, such as every regional brewer for a newly split craft beer slot, and generate personalised pitch assets for every prospect in one run, with batch download and team sharing.
  • Designs puts each prospect's logo on your own inventory photos, whether kit, LED boards, stadium signage or social content, with set placements, matching colour, sizing and perspective. It can also remove existing branding from those images, so you start from a clean asset.
  • Studio and Video turn those mockups into activation visuals and short clips, such as LED animations.
  • Decks builds a personalised deck for each brand with visuals, inventory and pricing, exported to PPTX or PDF.
  • Deck tracking shows open notifications, per-viewer sessions, dwell time and a slide-by-slide heatmap, so you know who to follow up first.

It works for incumbents too: show a current partner what an upgrade would look like before you offer it elsewhere. MK Dons' Chief Commercial Officer says: "It lets us show a prospect exactly what their brand looks like on our inventory before they've even signed." Sportworks reports, from its own client data, 10x faster production, 50% lower cost, 3x more conversions and average payback in under 30 days from first use (Sportworks customers).

FAQs

What is category exclusivity in sponsorship?

A promise that a partner is the only brand in its category within your property. Define it tightly so it does not block unrelated sales.

Can a club have two beer sponsors?

Yes, if each has a distinct role, as with Cambridge United's craft and international split. Agree it with both in writing.

Does exclusivity cover a sponsor's parent company?

Only if the contract says so. Decide in writing whether sister brands count as competitors.

What if a league sponsor competes with my sponsor?

Check which inventory the league controls. Club and league deals can coexist, as in the Championship, but talk to the league early if assets overlap.

What if a player's personal sponsor clashes with a club partner?

Your player contracts and image rights terms should set the rules. Raise it with the player and agent well before the activation.
